Newburgh fire department faces layoffs, house closure
The Newburgh Fire Department is facing cuts and a firehouse closure under the city?s proposed 2011 budget.
According to Fire Chief Michael Vatter, 12 firefighters and an office employee will lose their jobs if the budget is passed. It would also shut down one of the city?s two firehouses.
Vatter says fewer firefighters would mean a greater response time and increased danger to those who live and work in Newburgh.
Mayor Nicholas Valentine disagrees, saying the layoffs are minor and would not have a great effect on people?s safety.
Both sides say they will continue to meet and try to come up with a fair solution. The deadline to pass the budget is Nov. 22.
