NEWBURGH - A Newburgh police lieutenant helped save a man’s life at the Newburgh Public Library Monday by using Narcan, the antidote for heroin overdoses.

Less than an hour after he sat in two-hour training on how to administer the anti-opiate overdose drug, Lt. Tom Murphy had to put that training to the test.

Murphy and his partner were called to the local library because a 25-year-old man had overdosed in the bathroom.

He laid the man on the floor and pulled out his Narcan package. He sprayed the drug up the man's nose and within minutes the victim was revived.

Murphy, a 17-year veteran of the department, says he's seen firsthand results of the heroin epidemic. He says it feels good knowing officers are now armed with a tool that can help them help the community.

“I think it’s going to help save lives,” he told News 12.
