Police officers returned to Newburgh Free Academy in an effort to increase security following a possibly gang-related fight that resulted in the death of a senior.

Newburgh Police Chief Eric Paolilli says a federal grant funding police presence inside Newburgh schools ran out last year, and the City Council decided to pull officers out of schools and put them back on the streets.

Following the Jan. 13 stabbing involving a 13-year-old boy who allegedly stabbed a 17-year-old student, the city started negotiations to restore police presence in schools.

While funding negotiations are in progress, Paolilli says he will keep two officers at the high school until tensions have died down.
