News 12 New Jersey’s Brian Donohue on Wednesday went in search of the worst-smelling location in the state. But New Jersey is the Garden State – a state that has many lovely smells.
The assignment was based on the news that the online candle company Homesick created 50 candles based on the smells of every state. New Jersey's candle has hints of ocean salt, cranberries and vanilla. But this did not stop the people of the internet from making jokes at New Jersey’s expense that the candle would smell like oil refineries and garbage dumps. Donohue found the worst smells in an area near a sewage treatment plant and recycling factory in Newark.
But Donohue says that he stumbled upon one of the best smelling areas in New Jersey – Wemrock Orchards in Freehold. He says that late in the season one can smell the sweetness of the strawberries that grow on the farm.
The location is also 2 miles from a Nestle Factory that makes freeze-dried coffee. It is also only 17 miles from the beach and when the winds are blowing the right way, one can smell the salty ocean air.
Wemrock Orchards has been in Richard Giunco's family since 1952. Donohue says Giunco deserves an award for the “best-smelling location in New Jersey.”
Donohue says that if there was an official state smell, it should be the Freehold strawberry patch. He says that agriculture is represented, along with industry represented by the coffee and the geography and geology represented by the salt smell of the ocean.
