MOUNT VERNON - A high school student is under arrest after she allegedly beat a classmate in a stairwell at their Mount Vernon school.
Shania Scott, 15, says she was attacked by her classmate last Friday at Nellie A. Thornton High School. Scott claims the girl pulled her by her hair, then threw her down before stomping on her head. Scott says the wound in her head was so severe, she needed five staples to close it.
Scott's mother, Lamaris Groves, says she's complained to school officials for weeks that her daughter was being harassed by four classmates. The girl who allegedly beat Scott and a second student who recorded the attack on a cellphone were among them. Police say they arrested the girl after reviewing the cellphone video and charged her with assault.
Groves says the school did not notify her about her daughter, who was the one who called her about the incident. She added that the school needs additional security, including guards patrolling the stairwell where the alleged attack happened. The school released a statement, saying it is investigating the incident.
Scott says she and the other student were both suspended five days for fighting. Her mother is trying to have the suspension wiped from her record.
