EAST RAMAPO - Challengers seeking to win Tuesday's school board elections in East Ramapo say they want to improve the schools, but the balance of power may still favor private yeshiva schools.

"Once we restore trust, in the entire community, then we can truly advocate for all children," says Kim Foskew, who is running alongside Jean Fields, Natasha Morales and Sabrina Charles-Pierre.

If all four win, the board would still have five officials who are known to favor yeshiva schools. Those five members are not up for re-election Tuesday. Critics accuse the board of heavily favoring private yeshiva schools at the expense of public school students.

The four challengers say they want to turn the cash-strapped district around.

The state Department of Education has issued a report, labeling East Ramapo's eight schools troubled.

The state also appointed a monitor to make sure the school board spends money wisely and treats all children fairly, but that monitor does not have veto power.
