MONROE - Update, 11:14 p.m.:
Challengers Anthony Cardone and Michael McGinn have ousted incumbent Dennis McWatters in Republican primary vote for two Monroe Town Council seats.

Original story as follows:

The controversial land deal to expand the Orthodox Hasidic Jewish village of Kiryas Joel could affect the outcome of Thursday's Monroe Town Council primary vote.

A race among three Republicans is on in the town for just two seats.

As News 12 previously reported, the town voted 4-1 earlier this week to allow Kiryas Joel to annex 164 acres of town-owned land despite intense opposition.

"I would've voted no because there wasn't enough information," says candidate Anthony Cardone.

Cardone and candidate Michael McGinn are backed by a political and community activist group, United Monroe, which opposes the village's expansion plans.

The third candidate, incumbent Dennis McWatters, lost United Monroe's backing despite his lone vote in opposition to the annexation.
