POMONA - A battle is brewing over plans to eliminate the Rockland County Sheriff's mounted patrol.

Under the 2016 budget proposed by County Executive Ed Day, the unit would be put out to pasture to save money.

Day says that with several hundred layoffs expected, he finds it hard to justify funding the unit.

Sheriff Lou Falco says that's false savings.

"That 10-foot-high police officer, which equals one cop on a horse, equals 10 officers on the ground," he says.

The final word on the fate of the mounted unit will come from the Rockland County Legislature when they adopt a final budget for 2016.
