MONTEBELLO - A battle is brewing in Montebello over a man's bee-pollinated farm.

The village has stung Zev Oster with three violations since he added 60 blueberry bushes and two bee hives to his 1.3-acre, residential-zoned lot on Spook Rock Road.

Through an online petition, Oster has collected more than 500 signatures to let his family turn the patch of land into a small, self-pick farm with 1,000 bushes.

Montebello Mayor Jeff Oppenheim says that if village code does not expressly allow something, such as bee hives, an appeal must be made to the village zoning board. The mayors say that Oster did not consult the board and went straight to construction.

Meanwhile, Oster is calling the situation a misunderstanding, saying that he was unaware of zoning procedures. He says he is looking forward to getting his small farm up and running.

Oster is scheduled to appear in Montebello Village Court to address the violations on June 24.
