HILLBURN - Firefighters were able to put out a large brush fire in Hillburn on Thursday.

Crews from a half-dozen departments fought the flames in the area of Brandt Road. Officials say windy conditions and access to water made it difficult to put out.

Residents in the area say smoke could be smelled for miles. "I came out of my house around 1 p.m. and I smelled lot of smoke. Then I saw everything going on, all the noise and everybody’s whistles going off, and apparently we have a fire in the woods," says Arthur Ayres.

No one was injured. Investigators are working to figure out what sparked the flames
