CHESTNUT RIDGE - A driver was sent to the hospital and a car was totaled in an early morning crash in Rockland County.

Police say a serious one-car accident happened on the corner of Scotland Hill Road and Scotland Road in Chestnut Ridge around 5 a.m. today.

Investigators say the driver lost control and went down a driveway on Scotland Road and smashed into a tree. The impact was so great that the driver’s side tire wound up inside the car.

Police say the driver, a 32-year-old Ramapo man, was conscious but had to be taken to Westchester Medical Center.

Neighbors say the intersection has had numerous accidents, and sometimes people drive too fast in spite of stop signs and posted speed limits. "It's not the first time, it's not the second time, it's not the third time … it's all about speeding,” says Anna Oswald, who has lived on Scotland Hill Road for 17 years.

It is unknown at this time what caused the accident or if drugs or alcohol were involved.
