CLARKSTOWN - Some Rockland lawmakers faced resistance from other legislators in a bid to get suspended Clarkstown Police Chief Michael Sullivan back on the job Tuesday night.

Many of Sullivan's supporters turned out to the monthly meeting with hope that the Rockland County Legislature could sway the Clarkstown Town Board to reinstate the chief, but they left disappointed.

"The Legislature has no jurisdiction," explained Legislator Lon Hofstein, adding, "How can we go forward? Make a decision to pass a resolution to tell the Town Board of Clarkstown to reinstate Chief Sullivan, when we don't know any of the facts."

Sullivan, who attended that meeting, is facing seven charges including misconduct and incompetence. His supporters called the charges political and do not want the chief's dismissal to come so soon after multiple, deadly attacks on police around the country.

Clarkstown's supervisor released a letter reprimanding county legislators for attempting to interfere with the town's investigation.

Sullivan’s supporters say they now plan to return to the next board meeting on Aug. 9.
