SPRING VALLEY - The husband of a woman killed by a Metro-North train last year is calling on Gov. Andrew Cuomo to sign a bill that would make train crossings safer.

Alan Brody's wife Ellen died when her car got stuck in the middle of a grade crossing in Valhalla and was hit by a train. Five train passengers also died in the crash.

State Sen. David Carlucci and Assemblyman Tom Abinanti are among some of the lawmakers who backed legislation, calling for a survey of all 5,300-plus grade crossings in New York. The goal is to identify those in need of upgrades to prevent accidents.

Sen. Carlucci says Gov. Cuomo needs to be pressured to sign the bill. According to Brody, crossings throughout New York are still using antiquated technology. He says it would be easy to bring all of them up to date.

Brody along with Sen. Carlucci say the first step is to identify the crossings that need upgrades.

Gov. Cuomo's office says he is reviewing the bill.
