YONKERS - A report says Metro-North has been fined more than half a million dollars over the past decade for safety violations, and commuters are calling it troubling.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) released the report from the Federal Railroad Administration Friday. The report says that since 2004, there have been 139 reported safety violations for Metro-North. More than 40 percent of the violations were issued for improperly reporting accidents to the FRA.
Blumenthal says the numbers show an urgent need for immediate action to be taken on improving safety and accountability. Blumenthal also wants to see more transparency from Metro-North.

A spokesperson for Metro-North says the railroad shares Blumenthal's goals for more safety. The spokesperson adds that a thorough inspection of tracks has been performed in the wake of two derailments in the past year and says the railroad is implementing other safety improvements.
