GOSHEN - Dozens of people were arrested in another welfare fraud sweep in Orange County.

County officials held a news conference in Goshen Wednesday to announce their fifth welfare fraud sweep in two years.

This time, 24 people were arrested, half of whom are from Newburgh, for allegedly stealing a quarter of a million dollars in total from the welfare system. Those arrested were rounded up in their homes or turned themselves in after allegedly lying on applications to get benefits to which they were not entitled.

Officials say that in some cases the fraud lasted for months and in other cases up to a year.

"The taxpayers of Orange County are getting the bang for their buck here and the people committing fraud are getting caught," says Orange County District Attorney Dave Hoovler. "And that puts the money back into the pool for the people who need it."

Hoovler says that they've in total identified $1.5 million in fraud since they started cracking down, with much of that money being recovered.

Authorities say that while alleged offenders can face jail time, if convicted, they will be banned from receiving future benefits and have to pay back the money received.
