POMONA - A driver was killed this morning when her car smashed into a tree on the Palisades Parkway.

Police say Myrian Romero, 31, of New Jersey, crashed around 6 a.m. today on the northbound parkway between exits 13 and 14 in the Pomona section of Haverstraw.

When first responders arrived, it took about 20 minutes to extricate Romero from inside a red Hyundai Elantra. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say she was heading to a site in Stony Point, which is where she reported for work as a steel worker on the new Tappan Zee Bridge construction project. Investigators say records show that she was on her cellphone at the time of the crash, but they say they believe she was using a hands-free device.
