SPRING VALLEY - The leaders of the East Ramapo Central School District on Tuesday met for the first time since state-appointed school monitors proposed changes to fix the beleaguered district.

On Monday, state-appointed school monitors -- headed by Dennis Walcott -- issued a report that includes a proposal for a permanent monitor with veto power over the school board.

Parents within the district have complained that the school board, which is dominated by members of the Orthodox Jewish community, has short-changed public schools in favor of private yeshivas.

School board president Yehuda Weissmandl has said the board does not need veto power. Interim Superintendent Dr. Deborah Wortham stands by the board, and says she approves of what's best for students.

The proposals will need legislative action in Albany. State Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski says lawmakers will begin looking at the proposals in January.
