SPRING VALLEY - Parents and students in the embattled East Ramapo School District met with a newly appointed state monitor Monday.

The parties met to discuss their concerns about the upcoming school year.

Parents say they hope Dennis Walcott will oversee reforms in the school district.

Walcott is one of three state monitors tasked with reviewing the way the cash-strapped district is run by its largely Hassidic Jewish board -- whose members send their own children to private yeshiva schools.

The new school year begins on Wednesday.
