SPRING VALLEY - State monitors in the East Ramapo school district said Wednesday that their first month on the job has been positive.

The three-member team appeared before a meeting of the State Board of Regents.

In his presentation to the Board of Regents, lead monitor Dennis Walcott said they have been getting cooperation from school district officials, and that one of the top issues they are addressing is improving school facilities.

The school board has been under fire in recent years for perceived discrimination against members of the community who are not Orthodox Jewish.

The monitors and state officials said critics need to understand students at private Jewish schools have a legal right to some support from the school districts.

They also said district officials need to learn to be more responsive to the community. School board critics had wanted a monitor with veto authority over board actions, but legislation authorizing that died in Albany back in June.

Steve White, a vocal critic of the board, said the monitors need to be given time to do their job, but he's disappointed with what he's seen so far.

"Until we see some concrete action to take power away from the school board, I don't believe that we are going to be satisfied," he said.

Those frustrations will likely be aired at a forum being hosted by the monitors in early October.
