TUXEDO PARK - A war hero, teacher and historian celebrated his 100th birthday today.

Gardner Watts, of Suffern, was surrounded by loved ones as he celebrated. He says his secrets to living so long are having a family, a number of friends and a good education.

Watts taught history in Suffern schools for decades and was the village historian for almost 50 years. He has lived in Suffern since he was about 9 years old, and he helped start the Suffern Village Museum.

The World War II veteran says he plans to stay active as he starts his second century. He's looking forward to canoeing again this summer. He also plays billiards and loves to hike.
