A fire destroyed a home in Rockland County overnight.

Fire officials say the fire was already traveling through the three-story, single-family home at 17 Orchard St. in Hillcrest when they arrived at 12:45 a.m. They say the entire back of the house was burned out, and it took about 45 minutes to get the flames under control. "We had fire in the first and second floor, heading into the attic. First crew got here and began an interior attack," says Hillcrest Fire Chief John Erzen.

The homeowner and his eight children were already out of the house by the time crews arrived. There is no word yet on the cause of the fire, but the homeowner tells News 12 the fire started in a small room on the first floor in the rear of the house, and by the time it was discovered, it had grown out of control.

Several other fire departments assisted in battling the flames. One firefighter suffered minor injuries, which were treated at the scene.
