RYE - An oil spill near some wetlands in Harrison have residents concerned.

Fire and police began getting calls around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday about a smell of oil coming from a vacant home on Pilgrim Road.

Fire, police and hazmat crews determined floodwaters from the wetlands spilled into the underground home heating oil tanks in the vacant home and caused them to leak. Crews are working to minimize the spillage of oil in the wetlands.

The front and backyards of the home were underwater, and the street in front of the home also flooded. Neighbors tell News12 the house was purchased a few years ago, but the owners never moved in. They say this area is prone to flooding but never this bad. They actually have an area water pump that usually gets rid of the water, but for some reason it stopped working so that also contributed to the problem.

The good news is no other homes in the neighborhood were affected.

Members of the Harrison Building Department and the state Department of Environmental Conservation are on the scene trying to determine the best course of action. Some residents want the vacant home torn down and the flooding problem to be rectified to prevent this ongoing problem. "The water has been coming down the road and finding its way down the backyard of this house for about four years, creating floods," says Neil Frankel, of Harrison.
