WHITE PLAINS - A former White Plains firefighter was sentenced Friday afternoon for a deadly drunken driving crash that killed a Harrison mother.

Erick Refvik, 35, will spend five to 15 years in prison after admitting that he was high on alcohol and drugs, after a 12-hour bender, when he got behind the wheel of his SUV last November. Refvik was driving the wrong way on South Lexington Avenue in White Plans when he crashed head-on into a Honda Civic, killing Reyda La Madrid and seriously injuring her ex-husband Edgar Lopez.

In court, Refvik cried as he read a statement, apologizing to the victims, and saying that he is afraid as he enters prison.

In addition to his five to 15-year sentence, Refvik must pay thousands of dollars in fines. He lost his job as a firefighter after pleading guilty to the charges.
