CONGERS - A freight train caught fire in Rockland County this morning.

A spokesman for CSX Transportation says a fire broke out in the engine compartment of the lead locomotive of one of their freight trains at 7:50 a.m. today.

The train was traveling from upstate heading to New Jersey. It included four locomotives and 37 cars carrying a variety of freight, including construction debris, soy bean oil, solvents and plastics components. The biggest concern was a car containing chlorine. "The nearest chlorine tanker was seven cars back so there was never any danger," says Clarkstown Police Sgt. Glenn Cummings.

The crew stopped the train safely, and the Congers Fire Department was able to put the fire out in about 40 minutes using foam. An emergency locomotive arrived within hours to cart the disabled train away.

There is no official word as to what caused the fire, but emergency crews say it was most likely some sort of engine malfunction.
