HAVERSTRAW - Rockland County officials are cracking down on illegally subdivided homes in Haverstraw. The Village of Haverstraw is handing homeowners big fines for building violations. Haverstraw resident Juan Rollano was recently fined $15,000 for allegedly turning his single-family home into an illegal rooming house with two apartments and other single, rented rooms. Another homeowner, Joseph Klien, was ordered to pay $5,000 because officials say he had an illegal apartment in the basement of his Fairfield Avenue home. Building inspector Ruben Berrios warns illegally divided homes can be dangerous. He's part of a county-wide task force going after these types of violations.
