ELMSFORD - Many Americans are hitting the road for Thanksgiving, hoping to leave behind the rancorous election and focus on what unites them: family and tradition.

AAA says 49 million people are expected to travel 50 miles or more for the holiday, the most since 2007. The travel agency say that about 2.7 million New Yorkers will drive to Thanksgiving dinner.

If you're flying for the holiday, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is reminding you to get to the airport early. More than 1.5 million passengers are expected to pass through airports in the region.

Metro-North will have extra early getaway trains beginning at 1 p.m. today.

Police across the region say they will have extra patrols on the road to crack down on drunken driving and underage drinking.
