GREENWOOD LAKE - Two men from the Hudson Valley have survived a small plane crash on Long Island.

Aviation expert and former FAA investigator Rich Wyeroski said the Piper PA-28-140 suffered engine trouble before careening to the ground Sunday evening. He rushed to the scene and said Scott Clifford, 34, of Wallkill in Ulster County, and his passenger, Michael Rome, 66, of Greenwood Lake, were still in the burning plane.

Wyeroski said neighbors and Bayport firefighters who live in the area pulled the men from the fire and tried to put the fire out with garden hoses. Police said the efforts of the good Samaritans saved the victims’ lives. "They were able to speak a little bit, but they were in shock, and they were taken to the hospital," he said.

Clifford has two broken legs and a head injury and is listed in serous condition at Stony Brook University Hospital, while Rome is listed in good condition.

The FAA is investigating the crash.
