NEW YORK - Midtown Manhattan came to a standstill today as hundreds of people remembered the three little girls from Connecticut who were killed in a fire on Christmas Day.

The funeral procession for Lily Badger, 10, and 7-year-old twins, Sara and Grace, shut down 5th Avenue as their caskets were brought into St. Thomas Episcopal Church. All three girls attended the Windward School in White Plains.

High-profile members of the New York fashion community such as Vera Wang and Calvin Klein came out to support the girls' mother and their colleague, Madonna Badger.

The children were killed along with their grandparents, Lomer and Pauline Johnson, in an early morning fire at their home in Stamford, Conn. when discarded embers from a fireplace ignited.

The girls apparently didn't want Santa to be burned and asked to have the fireplace cleaned out before bedtime. Badger and her boyfriend escaped the blaze.

Badger's house was under construction at the time, and investigators say it didn't have smoke detectors or a certificate of occupancy. It's unclear if the contractor involved will face any charges.
