KIRYAS JOEL - The leaders of Kiryas Joel have taken plans to expand their community to the next level.

The Hasidic village of Kiryas Joel wants to expand its growing community into nearby Monroe. That plan was met with opposition and a lawsuit was filed to halt the expansion. Now, leaders of the religious community announced that they have filed a petition with the state to form the new town of North Monroe.

Residents living near Kiryas Joel say the Hasidic leaders are finding any way they can to get the land they need. One resident said it's disheartening for those who live in Monroe and love the town.

Those living in Kiryas Joel had little to say to News 12 about the petition.
