GOSHEN - The battle to save the Orange County Government Center from the wrecking ball is heating up.

Stephen Brander, Frank Carbone and Vincent Ferri are filing a lawsuit against County Executive Steve Neuhaus and Legislator Leigh Benton to try and save the historic building, which was designed by Paul Rudolph.

The Orange County Board wants to demolish the building because of damage it sustained in hurricanes Irene and Lee. The plaintiffs say the building should be protected.

The plaintiffs, who are working with Orange County attorney Michael Sussman, say the building has been deliberately neglected by the county to get what they want.

Orange County officials had hoped that the demolition of the government center would begin in April, but the plaintiffs hope that an injunction will be granted by a judge.

A spokesman from the Orange County executive's office says that the lawsuit has no legal merit.
