NEWBURGH - Democratic U.S. Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney has won re-election in the 18th Congressional District against Republican Phil Oliva.

Maloney cast his vote Tuesday morning in Cold Spring. The 50-year-old has sat in the 18th District seat for two terms since 2012, and will now sit there for a third.

The Democratic incumbent hoped loyal supporters would remember his record and come out again in full force.

“The most important thing is that all of us come together and work together when the dust settles,” he said. “We have work to do and it's more important than any political party. We have to work together and rebuild our country."

This year was Oliva's first run for political office. The Republican is a top advisor for Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino and was on a leave of absence to run for the seat. He cast his vote in Somers.

The Oliva campaign was in Mahopac Tuesday night, and Maloney's was at the Newburgh Brewery in Newburgh.

The two ran a heated race for months, starting last summer when Oliva accused a tracker of spying on his wife and children. Last week, Oliva accused Maloney of lying about his work in Congress. Maloney tried to thwart the attack, calling it a "desperate attempt" for airtime.

The 18th District includes all of Orange and Putnam counties, as well as parts of southern Dutchess and northeastern Westchester counties.
