NEW SQUARE - Police say they have arrested a man for stealing a garbage truck before crashing it into a school bus.

Chiam Sirkis, of New Hempstead, was drunk at the time of the theft, officials say. The accident happened on North Main Street in New Square.

Police say as they were arresting Sirkis, he attempted to kick out the windows of the patrol car. No one was aboard the school bus during the accident.

Sirkis is being held in the Rockland County Jail on $40,000 bail.
