MIDDLETOWN - Police have arrested a man in Middletown who they say murdered his longtime girlfriend.

Robert Burger, 67, was arrested Saturday in upstate New York and charged with killing 56-year-old Rebecca Dethlefs. A maintenance man found her body in her apartment outside of Syracuse on Friday after neighbors complained of a foul smell.

Authorities say Burger fled the area taking Dethlafs' car, but was found hiding out at the Middletown Motel on Route 211 in the town of Wallkill.

Burger is on lifetime parole after serving 28 years behind bars for stabbing and killing a priest from Yonkers back in 1963.
