DOBBS FERRY - Safety camera testing is now underway on some Metro-North trains on the Harlem and Hudson lines.

Officials say passengers will be monitored from the moment that train pulls up until they depart. They will also track activities outside and inside where the passengers ride.

There will also now be a camera in the engineer's control room, which many people were calling for after the 2013 train derailment near the Spuyten Duyvil station. That's when an engineer fell asleep at the wheel while going 50 miles over the speed limit hitting a curve and killing four people and injuring 70 passengers.

In addition to curbing crime, officials say the cameras will be invaluable for investigations after any accidents or incidents.

There is no audio on the cameras, and officials do plan to post notices to tell people when there are cameras recording.

There is no word on the exact time when the railroad plans to install cameras on all the trains.
