MONROE - Monroe residents once again voiced their frustration with a controversial land deal in the village of Kiryas Joel Thursday night at a town board meeting.

The Monroe Town Board will make a decision on whether to approve the deal soon. If approved, it would nearly double the size of the heavily Orthodox Jewish village.

Anxious voters packed the town theater to protest ahead of the Sept. 8 voting deadline.

Kiryas Joel officials say they plan on "smart growth" for the community, but opponents say that proposed plans would lead to a massive influx of new residents that would strain the current infrastructure of neighboring areas.
