MONROE - Monroe residents voiced their concerns Monday about the potential annexation of more than 500 acres to the Hasidic Village of Kiryas Joel.

Kiryas Joel, located within the Town of Monroe, is looking to double in size by taking 507 acres of mostly undeveloped land from the town.

The meeting's agenda included the environmental impact the annexation would have. One resident told News 12 that Kiryas Joel would ruin the environment if the land is granted to the village.

Residents in Kiryas Joel say that additional housing is desperately needed, but the plan has been met with protests for months. The protesters allege political corruption on the side of Kiryas Joel, leading them to create an anti-annexation group, United Monroe.

Town Supervisor Harley Doles says that regarding the annexation, his concern is that the school district is not affected.

A public forum will be held Tuesday at Uta Mesivta of Kiryas Joel at 5 Israel Drive.
