New Windsor bridge damaged by Irene still needs repair

NEW WINDSOR - Lawmakers are fighting to fix a New Windsor bridge that's still closed a year after Tropical Storm Irene hit the area.

Orange County Executive Ed Diana and Congresswoman Nan Heyworth say the Forge Hill Road Bridge is still not passable. The roadway, which runs over the Moodna Creek, was washed away during Irene and Tropical Storm Lee last year.

The politicians gathered at the bridge yesterday demanding that both the state and federal governments speed up the process to get the bridge fixed. "The money is there from the federal level; what is holding it up process [is] red tape; this is unacceptable; this is an existing bridge; it should take weeks perhaps to determine that it is appropriate to fix the bridge and to make sure that specifics are taken care of, lets get this done," says Heyworth.

The state Department of Transportation did not return calls requesting a comment.
