NEWBURGH - Newburgh Fire Department could lose a dozen firefighters this year if it fails to renew a federal grant, officials say.

"If the federal grant is not approved, we are laying off 12 people on July 21," says Chief Terry Ahlers. "There's no getting around it."

Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney is calling on the federal government to renew for two more years the $2.5 million grant that was originally issued in 2013.

Fire officials say the cuts could reduce crews from four to three members, which they say could be the difference between life and death for firefighters and fire victims alike.
