NEWBURGH - Newburgh firefighters are being hailed as heroes tonight after rescuing an 8-year-old boy who fell through a frozen pond yesterday.

Dalexis Carreras says he was on the pond with a friend at Downing Park when the ice began to break. He says he was in the water for 10 minutes before first responders arrived. Once on the scene, they extended a ladder to help him out.

Newburgh firefighters say Dalexis was cold and scared, but did not have hypothermia. He was hospitalized as a precaution and is recovering this evening.
