WEST NYACK - A man who stood with America's leaders as the country came under attack on Sept. 11 wrote a firsthand account of his experience.

Retired Lt. Col. Robert Darling, then a presidential helicopter pilot assigned to the White House military office, was ordered to the emergency operations center the morning of the attacks. Darling found himself answering the phones between the Pentagon and Vice President Dick Cheney. His book, "24 Hours Inside the President's Bunker," describes what unfolded in the White House on that day 14 years ago.

"I really want people to know what happened that day. I want them to know what our nation's leaders were willing to do for them," says Darling.

Darling, of Newburgh, will share his story at Mount Saint Mary College at an event Friday benefiting families of war veterans.
