NEWBURGH - A decorated Newburgh police officer was attacked by an angry mob as he tried to make an arrest on Liberty Street, officials say.

The assault of Officer Brandon Rola was captured on surveillance video at around 2 a.m. Friday. The video shows dozens of people spilling out of a nearby bar. Rola is repeatedly struck in the face.

Officials say 27-year-old Starkita Burks attacked Rola and broke his nose as the officer approached what he believed to be a possible riot. Other people in the crowd then held the officer down.

Rola was commended for saving two young boys who were trapped in a snowbank last November. He is recovering from his injuries.
