VALLEY COTTAGE - New measures are being taken to make rail cars filled with flammable liquids safer.

The NTSB issued an urgent recommendation calling for rail tank cars to be quickly replaced or retro-fitted to be more robust and fire-resistant. The crude oil tank cars run right up the east side of Rockland County, in some cases right through downtowns and residential areas.

Sheriff Louis Falco and Rockland County Executive Ed Day both have been pushing to improve safety on the rail for some time and applaud the new NTSB recommendation. They say it's especially important after the devastating 2013 train wreck in Quebec that left 47 people dead.

A spokesperson for CSX, who owns the freight line, says the company "welcomes the continued focus on this important issue and we continue to work cooperatively with regulators, oil producers, tank car manufacturers and others to identify and implement the best solutions to make the safe transportation of this product even safer."

Officials with CSX say the railroad doesn't actually own the tank cars used to transport crude oil. The company says they are either owned or leased by their customers.
