CHESTER - An illegal yeshiva that remained open in Orange County despite orders to shut down appears to have closed.

The O'Hel Toro yeshiva on Greycourt Road in Chester had ignored an order by the Orange County Department of Health to close. Inspectors say they found a hazardous raw sewage leak there, as well as unauthorized food service inside.

While the school appears to be closed, officials don't know if it's because of the county's orders to close or if students are on break.

Chester officials say the owner has a history of ignoring violations, including two on file with the town since last year for operating illegally as a yeshiva and without a certificate of occupancy.

The school is facing thousands of dollars in fines.
