CHESTER - A home laboratory in Orange County owned by a former school board president is under investigation for allegedly throwing out medical waste with regular garbage.

Authorities say the house on Murray Drive in Chester is the home of former Monroe-Woodbury School Board President Dr. Michael DiGeronimo.

Town Supervisor Alex Jamieson says that medical waste was being found in the garbage from the home.

The neighborhood and town uses a private company to pick up garbage. Jamieson says the DEC randomly checks the garbage dump and found evidence linking the trash to DiGeronimo's house.

The Department of Environmental Police were seen at the house Thursday with a search warrant for the lab inside the home, called Dover Brook Associates.

DiGeronimo claims to be in Pennsylvania and says he knew nothing of the raid at the time. His attorney tells News 12 that the company uses organisms to test food and has been there for 27 years without a problem.

DiGeronimo was school board president at Monroe-Woodbury up until last year and has been publicly named in a number of separate education-based lawsuits.

So far, there have been no arrests in connection to the investigation.

Town officials are looking into whether DiGeronimo is legally allowed to run the lab out of his basement.
