Officials: Pedestrian struck, killed on I-87 in Woodbury

WOODBURY - Officials say a pedestrian was fatally struck by a car after fleeing a traffic stop during the evening commute Wednesday.

The pedestrian was hit on the northbound side of the New York State Thruway between exits 16 and 17 near Woodbury.

Officials say a man was pulled over by state police at around 5 p.m. The man allegedly fled as police searched the car.

Fire officials say the car that hit the man tried to swerve, but wound up rolling over. The two people inside the car did not appear to suffer serious injuries.

The pedestrian was transported to St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital in Cornwall, but was soon after pronounced dead.

All lanes in the area were closed following the accident, with traffic being redirected at Exit 16 in Harriman.
