RAMAPO - Officials are attempting to piece together how an off-duty Peekskill police officer struck and killed a teen Wednesday night.

One teenage yeshiva student was killed and another was seriously injured in the two-car crash on Wednesday evening. "I've got three bodies; two people are unconscious. The driver is conscious. He's talking to me. Umm....I need medics ASAP" the voice on the 911 tape can be heard saying.

Police say the cars were both traveling east on Route 202 when a 2008 Honda driven by 19-year-old Tzvi Hakakian, of Monsey, slowed to turn left into a driveway of a yeshiva. A 2016 Lexus driven by Officer Jonathan Mosquera, 24, of Suffern, attempted to go around the Honda on the left side. The Lexus and Honda sideswiped each other.

Mosquera's car crossed the westbound lane, and he struck two students standing in the driveway of Yeshivat Tiferet Tora.

One student, 17-year-old Marcos Tawil, was brought to Good Samaritan Hospital and pronounced dead shortly after arriving. The other student, David Maldanado, is in fair condition at Westchester Medical Center.

Service was held for Tawil Thursday, and family and friends remembered the young vibrant life.

"I knew him very well. A good sense of humor. Smart, helpful. It's a very difficult time for the community, for everybody," says friend Binah Mishli.

Tawil's body was escorted back to his native home of Argentina after the services.

Police say they are looking into several factors, such as speed and road conditions, but they have ruled out drugs or alcohol. They say both drivers were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Police say it could take as long as a month to determine the exact cause of the crash. Charges have not been filed.
