CHESTNUT RIDGE - Lawmakers are renewing their efforts to grant more powers to the state-appointed monitor of the East Ramapo School District.

Former NYC Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott, who is on the monitoring panel, is calling for the state to grant veto power over the elected school board. State Sen. David Carlucci (D) sponsored a bill that would have granted such powers, but it was defeated last year.

Some say that Walcott's support of veto powers could help the bill get passed this time around. However, state Senate Majorit Leader John Flanagan says he believes in local control. "I believe in effect that school boards are essentially the board of directors, they're the management team," he said.

As News 12 has reported, critics have long contended that the elected school board, which is dominated by Orthodox Jews, has mismanaged the district by favoring their private schools over the needs of public school students.
