PEEKSKILL - A hearing was held in Peekskill Thursday to address how the impending closure of the Indian Point nuclear power plant will impact the community.

Residents attending the meeting at the McKinley Street Union Hall said they're concerned about how the closure will affect jobs and the local economy.

State Sen. Terrance Murphy, who hosted the meeting, said that he and several other local leaders were blindsided when Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that the plant would shut down completely by 2021.

The plant provides millions in revenue, and education, jobs, energy and taxes could take it hit when it goes offline.

A spokesperson for the state's public service commission says sufficient replacement power will be available and employees will be offered positions at existing facilities operated by Entergy, which also manages Indian Point. Safety and environmental inspections will continue, and the closure agreement allows ample time to plan and mitigate impact to local tax revenue, the spokesperson said.

Indian Point also supplies about 25 percent of New York City's energy.
