HIGHLAND MILLS - An Orange County Sunday school was placed on lockdown and Mass was canceled after police say a man with a box cutter threatened to kill himself in the church parking lot.

The incident happened Sunday morning outside St. Patrick's Church on Hunter Street in Highland Mills.

Police say a 31-year-old man with a history of mental illness sliced his hand with a box cutter while saying he was "trying to get out a government tracking device."

After three hours of negotiations, the man surrendered and was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

No criminal charges have been filed.
