SUFFERN - A Suffern man is alive thanks to the work of police officers who woke him up as his house burned.

The fire broke out on East Maple Avenue near Washington Avenue Sunday night. The fire is believed to have started in the back of the house, making its way to the second floor where Gerard Linker was sleeping.

Responding police officers helped to rouse Mr. Linker.

"I woke up to two police officers telling me that I had to leave the house because the house was on fire," said Linker.

His wife, Sherry, and two children weren't at home at the time of the fire.

"I'd rather be making arrangements about where I'm going to be staying for the next few weeks ... than to be making arrangements for my husband," said Sherry Linker.
